Step back in time this weekend as Gainsborough marks wartime centenary

Gainsborough will be stepping back in time this weekend as the town prepares to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One with a series of events across the town.

On Saturday June 30th the town will be coming together with a range of celebrations and events as Marshall’s Yard and Gainsborough’s Independent Traders host a range of war themed entertainment.

The event has been sponsored and supported by Gainsborough firm Elite Signs and will feature performances from singers and dancers including Sarah-Jayne and The Studio from 10am in Marshall’s Yard and Gainsborough's Market Place.

There will also be a host of displays and exhibitions, Gainsborough Heritage Centre have a Dambusters display to celebrate 75 years of the Dambusters.

Gainsborough Old Nick is hosting an open house and will be showcasing war time themed poetry from local school pupils and Marshall’s Yard will have a display of vintage vehicles with a mini display in the town centre.

A poppy making workshop will take place at Marshall’s Yard from 11am and the centre will also be paying tribute to the suffragettes as well as hosting a special hot air balloon act throughout the day.

Shoppers will have the chance to put on their dancing shoes and join the Blitz dancers as they perform dances throughout the day at Marshall’s Yard.

Assistant Centre Manager, Charlotte Toplass said ‘We are really looking forward to this event as it brings the whole town together to mark this anniversary. There are lots of activities for the whole family to enjoy.”

Gainsborough Town Council will also be holding their Armed Forces Community Day at Marshall's Sports Field from 10am until 7pm with plenty more war themed entertainment, displays re-enactments and more. At 3pm the Act of Remembrance will take place by the Royal British Legion.
