Gainsborough steps back in time to 1918 for special wartime anniversary

3 July 2018

Gainsborough stepped back in time at the weekend for a special anniversary celebration which was held right across the town to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Special themed entertainment and events were held in Gainsborough Market Place and at Marshalls Yard with hundreds of visitors and shoppers enjoying the event in the summer sunshine.

Vintage vocalist Miss Sarah-Jayne performed in both Marshall’s Yard and The Market Place taking people back in time with some war time classics.

And the popular Blitz Dancers performed at Marshall’s Yard and invited everyone to join in with them as they danced to 1940’s and 50’s music.

Vintage cars, war time vehicles and classic minis were also on display across the town.

Shoppers and visitors were also treated to a visit from a comedy duo meeting and greeting in their special themed tank and the event paid homage to the suffragettes to mark the centenary of female suffrage.

Children were encouraged to get involved with the event and create their very own poppy in a craft area at Marshall’s Yard.

And visitors to the town were also able to enjoy Gainsborough Old Nick’s open house and 75 years of the Dambusters display at the Heritage Museum as part of the town wide event.

Retailers including Browns Department Store at Marshall’s Yard entered into the spirit with special displays and 1918 style costumes for the staff.

Assistant Centre Manager at Marshall’s Yard, Charlotte Toplass, said: “The event was a great success, the sun was shining and everybody was in great spirits to mark the anniversary with events and activities happening throughout the day.

“People of all ages enjoyed the music, put on their dancing shoes and enjoyed the celebrations across the town. We’d also like to say another big thank you to the Gainsborough business Elite Signs for sponsoring and supporting the event.”
