Town pulls together to bid for in bloom success!

Gainsborough businesses are hoping award success will bloom from pulling together for a top regional award for the town’s floral displays.

Last year saw Gainsborough awarded with the silver award in the East Midlands In Bloom Awards - but with limited resources and volunteers the In Bloom team have called on local businesses to lend a hand.

The wooden planters seen around the Market Place are extremely time consuming to keep deadheaded and well litter-picked and the group of volunteers are finding it an increasing struggle to keep on top of everything as well as establishing areas of improvement to score more points every year.

Sills & Betteridge Solicitors, Hope Church, Crawshaws, Papa’s Fish and Chip Shop, Burton and Dyson Solicitors, Boots, Oldrids and Nat West Bank have all agreed to take responsibility of ensuring the planters are well deadheaded and presentable throughout the summer freeing up some time for the volunteers to tackle further areas to improve on.

Added to this, businesses have really got behind In Bloom this year sponsoring the planters situated around the town ensuring funds are replenished within the charity bank account to fund the further work the team need to do to achieve silver gilt.

Gainsborough Trinity FC, Horsley’s, the independent traders group and Mc Donald’s have all taken sponsorship of planters located around the town with Mc Donald’s even paying for their own to be positioned outside the restaurant. This has given the team an enormous boost and will help pay towards further plants and equipment to keep the initiative going.

Chair of Gainsborough in Bloom, Alison Hall, said: “We are delighted with the support town centre businesses are giving us this year both with funding and by lending a hand. The more people we can get involved looking after their area outside the store and any planters there, the more we can get on with other things to make the town look great.

“Gainsborough In Bloom isn’t just about making the town look presentable for the competition, although it is this that puts Gainsborough on the map, it’s about making our town look lovely all year round so residents and visitors enjoy coming here as opposed to elsewhere.

“Pride in the town you work and do business in doesn’t have to cost anything, it can just be a matter of lending a hand on an evening helping us weed or coordinating a small team of staff to target an area to litter pick for example.”

Staff from Browns Department Store have supported Gainsborough In Bloom heavily since opening on Marshall's Yard by maintaining, weeding, cleaning and planting up their adopted area within Whitton's Gardens. The team also work hard within store to raise money for the group to help towards the cost of plants and equipment.
